For any student considering learning Reiki and energetic healing, the decision will create many important questions to make sense of and to navigate. It is a decision that shouldn’t be rushed and is one that should be well thought through and researched. In this article i will outline 4 of the common questions and answers i am frequently asked by my reiki students that might help you too!

Ive heard about different styles of reiki, which one is the real deal?

In the 21st Century, there are now different dialects of Reiki that have evolved since it was first discovered. One of the key decisions to make is which tradition you wish to study. After all, this is your spiritual education we’re talking about here and you want to ensure your receiving the best quality tuition.

The original tradition of Reiki is known as the ‘Usui Reiki Tradition’ or ‘Usui Shiki Ryoho’ named after Reiki founder Dr Mikao Usui. You may also come across teachers of different styles such as Kundalini Reiki, Angelic Reiki and Egyptian Reiki. Whilst these other styles sound exotic and intriguing, its important to do your due diligence first. These styles are not the original Reiki that was developed in Japan in the 1850’s and have significant differences in their approaches to energetic healing.

Research the course curriculum, teacher lineage, qualifications and credentials to make sure its the right fit for you.

So, what exactly is a Reiki Master and how do i know if they are legit?

Traditional Reiki can only be taught by authorised Reiki Master Teachers who have completed all 4 degrees of required training. They are qualified with the skills and expertise to continue passing on the teachings and conducting attunement initiations into Reiki. Don’t be afraid to ask prospective teachers about their training. An authentic Reiki Master will always be open as to where and with whom they studied.

Transparency, honesty and integrity are all vital qualities to look for in a Reiki Master. They will not make you feel lesser than them and will embody unconditional love in their personal manner. A true Reiki Master knows that their work and lifestyle is of service to others.

A master will give all the knowledge needed for the growth and development of the student according to the circumstances of the present moment. They won’t act with hostility, arrogance or supremacy over anyone.

What exactly happens in a Reiki attunement initiation?

The Reiki attunement is a sacred and integral part of Reiki training. It is the attunement into Reiki that separates it from other forms of energetic healing. But don’t worry, the Reiki attunement is not a pass/fail test, painful or strenuous process. If anything its the opposite; deeply relaxing and peaceful.

It is a very sacred ceremony whereby the Reiki Master introduces the electromagnetic frequency of Reiki into the energetic field of the student. This is done through the use of Reiki symbols during a spiritual activation. The attunement enables the student to become a reiki channel and to access a new level of energy healing ability from beyond their personal ‘Ki’ or life force energy. This is the key difference between Reiki and other modalities as many modalities involve using the practitioner’s personal Ki rather than channelling universal energy.

At first glance the Reiki attunement can seem unusual and illogical. It is essentially an upgrade to your Auric field. An example to illustrate the effect of reiki on the human body is as follows:
The general population is resonating at (say) 2 volts of energy
At Reiki 1 this transmutes to 6 volts, then at Reiki 2 to 10-12 volts
At mastership level you upgrade to 600 volts so that you can then attune others

How do i find out more about Reiki training and potential teachers?

A common place for most students’ search begins with Facebook and Google, such is the nature of the digital age we live in. However, this is a very personal decision to make as legitimate Reiki training is conducted in person and you want to make sure you connect with and have the ‘right feel’ about your teacher.

Choosing to learn reiki is a significant step in your personal & spiritual development and its important to make sure that you can trust and feel comfortable with your teacher. It is normally a good idea to phone a potential teacher beforehand to ask any questions you have and clarify any concerns. Even better, meet them in person first.

Whilst the cost of your training is a factor for consideration, making sure your getting the original & correct teaching is far more important. A general guideline for Reiki 1 training in Australia is that it will cost under $400 for your course. Normally the course is 1 day in length but some teachers choose to spread it out over two days. Either 1 or 2 days is fine and shouldn’t affect the quality of content taught.

You should check to see if your Teacher is registered with IARP (International Association of Reiki Professionals) or the Australian Reiki Connection (ARC). Both of these associations are directories and resources for comparing teachers in your area. You can view more information about ASE Reiki courses on this website.
