If you are a spiritually aware person, empath, energy worker or just a sensitive human; you can often have a heightened sensitivity to the movements of your subtle energy system. But knowing how to interpret and diagnose these movements is a whole other ball game.
Knowing when a chakra centre is blocked, deficient, balanced or excessive is somewhat of an art form in itself. The symptoms of a blocked chakra will vary hugely across the 7 chakra system and will affect the functioning of the physical, emotional, energetic and mental body.
In this article i will focus on the Base Chakra, examining signs to look out for, symptoms of disharmony and what to do about it. This will draw on the chakra teachings from the Reiki Shiki Ryoho tradition of energetic healing.
The base chakra is also known as Muladhara in Sanskrit, the Huiyin in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Root or simply the First Chakra. In TCM, Huiyin translates to ‘Convergence of Yin’ and in Sanskrit Moola translates to ‘Root/Base’ and adhara to ’Support’. It is the first of the 7 main chakras and is the centre concerned with primal life energy, known as the Kundalini. It is feminine in nature and is generally accepted as being Red in colour & resonance.
If you are new to chakra theory, the base chakra is more simply described as an expression of your consciousness. It is a non-physical information field that permeates your Aura. In the male, the anatomical location of base chakra is in the perineum region, between the legs, midway between the anus and penis. In the female, it is near the cervix, where the vagina meets the uterus.
The information within the base chakra is synonymous with the qualities of survival, safety, security, sexuality, ‘I AM’ presence, connection to your body and primal needs. Imbalances are often deeply rooted & conditioned in your psyche and relate to fear based perceptions of the world.
Here are 3 common signs your base chakra is blocked:
- Disunity with your physical body
In this symptom the individual is dominantly mind-driven by mental states, emotions and desires. There is often a disconnection between mind & body with a lack of bodily awareness & sensitivity. This can manifest as feelings of being ungrounded, negative body image, underweight, being uncomfortable in your own skin and in some cases physical illness in the lower body. The individual can often be driven by mental achievements, results and goals and neglect nurturing their physical form.
- Not feeling safe or secure in yourself and/or in a group
This blockage can be experienced in multiple ways and can vary in the degree of intensity. The base chakra is intimately connected to your sense of group identity & interpersonal dynamics. This can show itself as a feeling of social insecurity & anxiety in group situations. Feelings of not being safe around new people, fears of social isolation, being rejected by the group and difficulty in trusting others. It can also be experienced as people pleasing, poor interpersonal boundaries and not knowing how to act around others.
- Being afraid of going into the unknown and of ‘What if’
This can range from having a real fear to more subtle anxieties. Regular feelings of uncertainty over what might happen, not having clear/logical explanations for everything, not having all the answers, not having order or structure to decision making, not having a plan of action and not knowing what to do with yourself.
If your reading this and think your base chakra is blocked, don’t panic!
Having blocked chakras is incredibly common and the first stage to healing them is having awareness of what is causing your suffering and the nature of the blockage.
Here are 5 ways you can start healing your base chakra today:
- Making regular contact with the earth
Earthing is one of the most impactful exercises you can do to become more grounded. Spending 30 minutes per day with your bare feet on natural ground for has been scientifically proven to release positive ions from the body absorb negative ions from the earth that improves sense of balance and being grounded.
- Embodiment practices and physical activity
Physical exercise is great for getting the happy juices flowing and feeling more alive. Conscious and spiritual practices such as Qigong, Tai Chi and Yoga which promote personal embodiment and mod-body integration can be particularly effective in helping you feel more connected to your body and more grounded.
- Finding your true individual needs & aspirations
A big part of healing the root chakra involves cultivating awareness of what your true and primal needs really are. This can take time and will need to look at finding the conditions that better support you in your home environment, the social circle of people you surround yourself with and what work you are passionate about & really want to do. This awareness helps you build confidence to provide for yourself and better meet your needs.
- Crystal healing and Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a useful chakra balancing tool that can have quick results for grounding and centering yourself. For the base chakra, consider using earthy scents for best results such as: ylang-ylang, rosemary, patchouli, sandalwood, myrrh and rosemary.
Crystals are another useful resource that are easy to use. The results come from the vibrational resonance of healing stones that balances excessive or deficient energy flow in the corresponding chakra. Just like the chakras, each stone has its own frequency. Healing stones that are red or that have shades of red are a good place to start for cleansing the root chakra as they will have a similar resonance in colour vibration. Healing stones such as red jasper, bloodstone, red carnelian, and garnet are some introductory crystals you can try.
- Energetic Healing
This is perhaps the most helpful treatment for a blocked chakra. A certified Reiki healer or energetic healer will be trained in how to treat the blockage, balance the chakra and bring your whole chakra system into optimum alignment. The results are instant and you start feeling noticeable effects and results immediately after the treatment session. Book a reiki check up with your local practitioner or alternatively learn how to heal for yourself on a Reiki Level 1 Course.
